Icons of India

India's architectural heritage is shaped by centuries of art, culture and craftsmanship. From the intricate windows of Hawa Mahal to the remarkable stone carvings of Konark, every monument carries a distinct identity and a story of its own.

Monuments of India is our interpretation of these remarkable structures through art and material. Each monument is individually illustrated with close attention to its original architecture, then translated into layers of precision-cut and engraved birchwood. The interplay of intricate detailing, physical depth and natural shadows brings a new dimension to these familiar forms.

Created as part of The Heritage Collection, each framed artwork celebrates a different chapter of India's history. Designed to stand on its own or be collected together, the series brings the country's extraordinary architectural legacy into everyday spaces.

Each artwork begins with a carefully developed architectural illustration, capturing the monument's defining proportions, intricate details and distinctive character. The drawing is then adapted for precision engraving and cutting, preserving its recognisable features while working with the natural qualities of wood.

The composition is constructed using two layers. Fine architectural details are engraved into both layers, while selected sections of the upper layer are cut away to reveal the artwork beneath. This creates a subtle play of depth, light and shadow that changes with the surrounding light.

The finished artwork is housed in an 11 × 11-inch black box frame, providing contrast and drawing attention to the intricate detailing. Protected behind clear acrylic glass, the natural grain and texture of birchwood remain visible, giving each piece its own character.
