A Little About My Woodworking Journey

Deepraj Dutta

Hello there! Many people often ask about how I started crafting wooden sculptures, so let's go back to my childhood. My dad, an exceptional artist, skilfully crafted furniture for our home, much of which we still use today. Beyond his regular job, he made a conscious effort to keep his creativity alive, often involving me in the process. As a kid, I learned the basics of working with wood, using tools, and, most importantly, understanding measurements and precision—qualities that stuck with me beyond my woodworking journey.

As a self-taught artist, I've spent a lot of time experimenting with different materials and forms to create art. Wood has always been my favourite, but I wanted to acquire the right skills to bring my creative ideas to life. So, I dove in and learned along the way, leading to my first sculpture, "Ganesha." It boosted my confidence and inspired me to explore more.

I have immense respect for artists who take unique paths in creating art. There are many challenges an artist faces to bring their art to life, making the story behind each piece intriguing. For me, compromise is not an option when it comes to what I want to create. My sculptures often feature layered designs, adding depth and volume, and include intricate hand-cut shapes, making the process truly challenging. Finding the right wood and materials is a vital aspect of this creative journey, adding an extra layer to the challenge. It's a crucial part of ensuring that each sculpture reflects my vision. Honestly, I enjoy overcoming these challenges more than the final piece. The joy of creating stays with the artist, while the end user only experiences the final product and sometimes its story.

In involving customers in the making process, I encourage them to be part of the journey, adding a personal touch to each creation. While I love working with wood, I also prioritize being mindful of nature. Our wooden sculptures are made from refurbished teak and rubber wood, treated to be as good as new. Each piece is unique due to the wood's grains and textures, and we guarantee that only one of each sculpture is ever sold to keep it exclusive.

My artistic style is inspired by India, its culture, and ethics, subtly reflected in all my artworks, especially our exclusive sculptures. I hope they find a place in homes, where they can add a touch of uniqueness to the overall decor.

As I explore other forms and mediums, working with any type of wood will always be special, bringing a touch of nature to every piece I create. My work is a tribute to India, nature, and all the artists who fearlessly overcome challenges to create art.

Cheers to art!

Deep.
